  • *** Who is one of your favorite techers?
  • Why?
  • Jesus and his disciples come to the town of Capernaum and on the next Sabbath Jesus goes to the synagogue and begins to teach
  • *** Gospel of Mark continues to unfold good news of Jesus Christ Son of God
  • Last week Jesus begins to preach
  • The right time is fulfilled
  • Kingdom of God is at hand
  • Repent and believe… trust… commit yourself and your life to this good news
  • What does that look like?
  • *** By the sea Jesus calls first disciples
  • Follow me and I will make you fishers of people
  • Do not know or understand
  • Somehow recognize compelling authority of person of Jesus
  • Immediately they leave behind and follow
  • Bible reading from Mark 1 continues to unfold
  • Good news of Jesus Christ
  • Kingdom of God present in person + work + words of Jesus
  • On Sabbath Jesus + disciples enter synagogue
  • Place of prayer + worship + Scripture
  • Begins to teach
  • Four gospels present Jesus four different ways
  • Gospel of Mark Jesus does not say much
  • John says one is coming who is stronger… more powerful than I
  • Will baptize with the Holy Spirit
  • Jesus = messiah and son of God
  • Jesus = stronger one God sends to confront and defeat forces of chaos + evil
  • Begins to teach
  • People astonished because he is not like teachers of Torah
  • Like Bible scholars and teachers
  • Teaches with authority
  • Right and/or power to do something
  • Jesus teaches as one who himself has authority to explain what Scripture means
  • People astonished because teaches with power
  • Book of Mark does not tell us what he says

  • *** End of story
  • People astonished + start saying
  • What is this? Some kind of new teaching!
  • We already know this
  • They are amazed because Jesus teaches differently
  • Mark does not tell us what Jesus said
  • Story begins = teaching – wow!
  • Story ends = wow – teaching!
  • Mark places another story in the middle
  • *** Men with unclean spirit comes into synagogue + shouts
  • What do you want with us Jesus of Nazareth?
  • Are you here to destroy us?
  • We know who you are
  • The Holy One of God
  • Jesus orders the spirit be quiet and come out
  • Unclean spirit shakes the man + shouts + comes out
  • Jesus demonstrates authority
  • Right + power to heal a person
  • Set him free from something that has control over him
  • Teaching – what does he teach?
  • Jesus speaks and/or acts with power to set someone free
  • Teaching
  • Mark does not explain what Jesus says
  • So much as it/he shows what Jesus does
  • New teaching with authority
  • Is powerful action of God that sets people free
  • From forces that hold us captive
  • The teaching of Jesus is Jesus

Editorial comment = This challenges the way some people like to talk about Jesus. How Jesus was such a great teacher, the teachings of Jesus this and that, but he wasn’t son of God, God incarnate, savior, and so on. The gospel of Mark – which most scholars agree is the first gospel to have been put together – doesn’t lend itself to that interpretation. Sure Jesus taught some things but who Jesus was/is and what Jesus does/did is if anything more important than what he “taught”.

  • *** Heart of the Christian faith
  • Heart of the good news of Jesus
  • Christian faith is not a philosophy
  • Not a list of teachings about Jesus
  • Not a list of practices
  • Although the teachings and practices are important
  • First of all
  • Most of all
  • The Christian faith
  • The gospel calls us into relationship with Christ
  • Not just do I know and practice?
  • Do I know Christ
  • The story Mark shares
  • Way he tells the story
  • Focus on how the kingdom of God is present in Jesus
  • What does the good news look like?
  • The authoritative word of Jesus
  • In place of prayer + worship
  • Not outside but within the community of people of God
  • *** The authoritative word of Jesus
  • The authoritative word of God who is Jesus
  • Saves a human being who bears image of God
  • Sets that person free from something
  • That holds a human being captive
  • For centuries Christian church discusses sometimes debates
  • What is salvation and how does Jesus save?
  • Salvation is forgiveness from sin? Yes
  • Salvation is healing of the mind? Healing of the soul? Yes
  • Healing of the body? Sometimes
  • Different forms of salvation are connected
  • Healing of relationship with God? Yes and yes
  • Mark presents salvation also
  • As God sends his son Jesus
  • Into enemy held territory
  • To confront and defeat forces of chaos and evil
  • To set captives free
  • Two things
  • Plan to preach through gospel of Mark
  • *** Go back to first gospel
  • Go back to first presentation of gospel of Jesus
  • To see + hear
  • To experience + encounter Jesus for the first time again
  • Not every Sunday but most Sundays
  • Not only for you but also for me
  • Last part
  • How? How do we place ourselves before the authoritative word of Jesus who is Jesus?
  • Scripture and prayer
  • Each day one chapter or one story
  • One Psalm
  • Relationship not with Scripture
  • Relationship with God who speaks through Scripture
  • Relationship with Jesus Christ to whom Scripture leads us
  • Prayer
  • Five to ten minutes
  • Do not have to speak
  • Place ourselves before the powerful one Jesus
  • Notice the story happens on the Sabbath
  • Because good Sabbath keeping includes so many spiritual practices
  • I thank God for you who are part of the life of this church family
  • For your presence + generosity + faithful service
  • Come for many reasons
  • Peace… learn the Bible… sing songs of faith… friendship and community…
  • Do we know Jesus Christ?
  • Do we share in the life of God?
  • All of the things we do as individuals and as a family of believers
  • We do them for the sake of the gospel
  • Because the kingdom of God is present
  • In the person and work and word of Jesus Christ
  • The Holy One of God
  • Do we bring before him
  • Those parts of ourselves
  • Sinful suffering wounded broken unclean
  • Bring into the presence of Jesus
  • Who does not only teach us what to do
  • Who is the powerful one of God
  • Who works for us / on us / in us / among us / through us
  • What we cannot do for ourselves
