*** Introduction

  • while Sam + Frodo exhausted with no food or water struggle to climb the slope of Mount Doom
  • *** Aragorn + Gandalf + small army make their final stand before the black gate of Mordor and the armies of Sauron
  • will they succeed? or will Sauron enslave + destroy everyone in Middle Earth?
  • how does the story end?
  • ***When the Sabbath is over Mary Magdalene + Mary mother of James + Salome buy spices so that can go + anoint the body of Jesus
  • Scripture for today from Mark 16
  • begins with reality of death
  • other Scriptures describe clearly
  • beginning with Genesis 3
  • death is not + was not plan and purpose of God for creation including human beings
  • because God intended life for us
  • these same women saw Jesus suffer + die + be buried
  • *** with no time to prepare his body
  • that is why they come
  • they fully expect
  • What do they expect?
  • we need to anoint his body
  • who will roll away the stone
  • pay attention to how God inspired the writer of Mark to tell the story of resurrection
  • has three parts
    • women come
    • angel announces
    • women leave
  • heart of resurrection story in Mark
  • is angel + news he announces
  • enter tomb / see young man / dressed in white / they are amazed or distressed
  • not what they expect
  • they know this is an angel
  • this angel announces the heart of the story
  • perhaps key of entire gospel of Mark
  • *** Do not be amazed / distressed
  • You see Jesus the Nazarean / who was crucified
  • Four short words in Greek
  • ηγρηθη ουκ εστιν ωδε – egerthe ouk estin ode
  • He is raised / he is not here

  • See where they laid him
  • So yes he was crucified + yes he died
  • the Lord of life for our sake
  • shared our humanity + entered death
  • death cannot hold creator + source of life
  • place of death cannot hold Jesus
  • He is not here
  • Messenger of God announces clearly
  • Raised… is not here
  • But go / say to his disciples – the ones who fail + fall + fear
  • Especially Peter
  • who denied Jesus
  • tell them what? tell us what?
  • That it is too late? too bad? we blew it? game over?
  • *** He is going before you into Galilee
  • Back to the beginning
  • where they come from / their home / their town / their every day work + routine
  • And there you will see him
  • Just like he told you
  • He goes before us into Livingston
  • where we live + work + play ball + go to school
  • and as they leave tromos kai ekstasis
  • *** trembling and confusion have them
  • they are afraid because
  • what is missing? how does the story end?
  • everything we see Jesus do and say
  • and hey what about the other gospels?
  • gospel of Mark announces he is risen
  • and does not include a resurrection appearance
  • the women leave afraid + silent
  • why?
  • no doubt that Jesus Christ son of God died + was raised
  • everything Jesus says happens
  • messenger from God announces
  • and someone had to tell this story
  • gospel of Mark challenges + assured us
  • how do we finish the story
  • *** what do we see + do?
  • we hear the news + know the great truth
  • he is raised – not in the place of death
  • are we afraid? are we silent?
  • do we go and tell?
  • do we look for Jesus who goes before us
  • just as he said
  • to engage in the mission
  • to announce + demonstrate good news of kingdom of God
  • which is how gospel of Mark begins
  • we know the fear + failure of the disciples
  • Jesus does not throw away Peter + others
  • He restores them
  • gives them mission of good news
  • and restores us also
  • we both finish + continue the story
  • He is raised
  • He is not here
  • Goes before us
  • We will see him
  • Gail O’Day = scholar of New Testament
  • No matter our silence + weak faith
  • We can always return to the Lord
  • None of us can go so far away we cannot be touched by God’s healing presence
  • The risen Christ is among us
  • He is and every shall be
  • Praise the Lord ***
