Sermon = The Greatest Story
Text = Isaiah 6
Sunday = Trinity Sunday (B)

  • in the year of the death of King Uzziah
  • Denny Fields lived in Elizabethton Tennessee
  • much of his life a strong Christian
  • knows the Bible very well
  • for some reason stops going to church
  • his daughter works at a church in Johnson City
  • this Sunday pastor will talk about Isaiah 6
  • first time in 20 years goes to church with his daughter Armetta
  • he has marked this chapter in his Bible
  • wants to know what pastor will say
  • my favorite story in Scripture
  • the most perfect or complete story in the Bible
  • captures heart of the Christian faith
  • heart of the good news of Jesus Christ son of God
  • In the year King Uzziah dies
  • Denny Fields asked why in that year?

  • Isaiah already a prophet for several years
  • King Uzziah king of Judah for 52 years
  • only king most people have known
  • a good king
  • people of God experienced peace + hope
  • in a year of death
  • of grief / disappointment / change
  • their world + society change
  • people wonder what happens next?
  • In the year King Uzziah died I see the Lord
  • High and lifted up. Sitting on a throne. The edge of his robes fill the temple
  • I see the Lord
  • when Isaiah is afraid / concerned
  • people have questions / feel alone / wonder what to do or say
  • he sees God
  • we are not alone
  • God is good and loves us
  • Christian faith a religion and not a religion
  • not a system of ideas about God
  • Christian faith = we know God
  • God is not there
  • God is here
  • on the other side of our awareness
  • outside when it is dark
  • someone is with us even if we do not know or we know and cannot see
  • Christ is among us
  • not a feeling but a reality
  • we base on lives and trust our lives to this reality who is a person
  • really three persons who are one being in communion
  • God the Father / God the Son / God the Holy Spirit
  • so trust ourselves + all our life to this God
  • so we can be healed + saved + transformed
  • High and lifted up and sitting upon a throne
  • God is here + God is in charge
  • yes we still have questions
  • we do not understand why everything happens
  • we trust God who is in charge
  • even during times of change + uncertainty
  • sees God
  • God is here and in charge
  • Isaiah sees heaven
  • sees these strange being who surround God
  • the world is more than we see or know
  • heaven is not far away or somewhere else
  • heaven is not earth and heaven not the same
  • creation is broken
  • heaven is here
  • overlaps / intersects / fills / intrudes in the same space as creation
  • when we gather here for worship
  • do not speak to someone upstairs
  • hope he is there
  • we gather in the presence of God
  • are in presence of heaven + heavenly beings
  • we are part of something much larger
  • heaven has an effect on earth
  • the doors shake from the voices of the heavenly beings
  • what do they proclaim?
  • קדושׁ קדושׁ קדושׁ יהוה צבאות / מלא כל־הארץ כבדו
  • Holy holy holy is the Lord of hosts / the whole earth is full of his glory
  • one of most significant statements in Scripture
  • God is holy
  • Radically different from and not at all dependant on us
  • and not far away
  • whole earth is full of the weight of his presence
  • Christian church to a large extent lost this awareness
  • that the world is charged with divine presence
  • nowhere God is not
  • when we are away from home
  • at hospital or work or traveling
  • when we make mistakes
  • overwhelmed or afraid or lonely
  • at peace and have joy
  • God is not there
  • God is here with us and among us
  • how do we respond to presence + holiness of God?
  • not awww
  • but augh! woe is me!
  • not only is Isaiah broken
  • among a people who are broken
  • dangerous to be in presence of thrice holy God
  • God responds with mercy
  • God takes initiative to heal the brokenness of a human being
  • seraph takes live coal from altar and touches his lips
  • God touches
  • God forgives
  • God heals
  • gives hope so we can continue
  • and gives us a mission
  • for each of us and all of us
  • who will go for us? whom shall I send?
  • who will represent God in world that is damaged by sin + rebellion
  • in all we are + say + do
  • in our friendships + families
  • teaching + study + work + faithful service
  • who will bear witness to risen Christ?
  • Isaiah earlier says oh no
  • now says
  • by grace + mercy of God
  • Here I am. Send me
  • much more we can say
  • Isaiah 6 like a room full of treasures + truth
  • how do we practice this text?
  • partly by changing how we see
  • how we envision God + his creation around us
  • to see every worship gathering
  • every time of prayer + Bible study
  • every time of fellowship
  • every event + activity
  • every act of service as opportunity
  • to encounter God
  • we are challenged + transformed + reenergized
  • to participate in his divine mission
  • to heal + to save broken creation
  • including broken human beings
  • we participate in very life of God
  • heaven + earth become one
